The Program encourages youth to become lifelong library users and combats the "Summer Slide" - which refers to research that shows that the reading skills a student gains during the school year are lost if he or she does not continue to read during the summer It is also an effective demonstration of the direct, real-world collation between providing a finished product or service and earning real money.

The pilot program commences in the Spring of 2010 and will be open to Prince George's County, Maryland 4th to 6th grade students. It doesn’t get simpler than this. The '5 Gets You 25' Summer Reading Program puts a new spin on the 3R’s: “The Rules”, “The Reading”, and “The Rewards”.
